2014 Honorees
Jean Dawes is known for her advocacy of education and fair housing in Palo Alto. For more than 20 years, she devoted much of her time and talent to the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD), serving on numerous committees and PTA boards while working as a teacher’s aide at two elementary schools and, later, as a college counselor at Palo Alto High School. Her last job was as an educational consultant for College Admissions Advisors Associates. She has been on the board of Pursuit of Excellence for 18 years, helping under-represented students pursue their goal of attaining a college degree. Jean has also spent almost three decades working to provide affordable housing in Palo Alto, with an overall goal of keeping it an economically and racially diverse community. Her board service in this arena includes 28 years (and counting) with Palo Alto Housing Corporation, and seven with MidPeninsula Citizens for Fair Housing. In

Corporate attorney Greg Gallo joined the Palo Alto law firm of Ware & Freidenrich in 1973 and is currently a partner at DLA Piper. During his 40+ years in law, he has dedicated much of his efforts to building nonprofit capacity throughout Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. In addition to serving on the boards of several for-profit organizations such as Maxtor Corporation and Network General, he has spent time on numerous nonprofit boards including those of the American Red Cross, Family & Children Services, the Entrepreneurs Foundation, and Silicon Valley Community Foundation. He also chaired the board of the Senior Coordinating Council (which later became Avenidas) in the early nineties. A Harvard Law School graduate, Greg is a Fellow of the American Leadership Forum and has guest lectured at both Stanford and UC Berkeley’s business schools. Both Isaac & Madeleine (“Maddy”) Stein are champions for community causes, nonprofit fundraising, and Stanford University. Their involvement with Stanford is longstanding and multifaceted; Maddy worked at (and earned a Master’s Degree from) the School of Education while Isaac was a graduate student working on his MBA/JD. Maddy’s lengthy volunteer resumé at Stanford includes: founding chair, School of Education Advisory Council; vice chair, Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society; and member of both Haas Center's National Advisory Board and Stanford Challenge Leadership Council. Jay Thorwaldson retired as editor of the Palo Alto Weekly in January 2011, capping a career in journalism and writing that spanned 50 years and had widespread local influence. Before joining the Weekly, he worked with the Palo Alto Times/Peninsula Times Tribune, taught at Stanford, and was director of public affairs at Palo Alto Medical Foundation. His written pieces have led to expansion of the Council for the Arts in Palo Alto, Palo Alto Information & Referral Service, Interagency Communication Network, and Palo Alto Community Network as well as creation of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and Palo Alto Fire Department’s paramedics program. Jay spearheaded the creation of Family LifeSkills and has served on many boards, including Senior Coordinating Council (Avenidas), PCC (Acterra), and Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce. He was also on the advisory boards of Adolescent Counseling Services and DeAnza College's communications program.

Carolyn Tucher’s extraordinary contributions to the community have focused on education, art education, and “building bridges across 101.” With regards to the latter, she was a founding board member of Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto and co-founded Cultural Kaleidoscope, an art center program that teams up children and teachers from East Palo Alto and Belle Haven classrooms with Palo Alto classrooms and local artists. Carolyn spent eight years on the PAUSF Board of Education, including two terms as president, and served on many committees including the California School Boards Association State Legislative Committee, the State Advisory Commission on Special Ed, and the State Superintendent’s Advisory Committee on the Teaching of Writing. She has also served on the boards of Leadership Midpeninsula, Adolescent Counseling Services, and Palo Alto Art Center Foundation (PAACF). Carolyn has been honored with
